I needed a little more storage for the large flat and odd-shaped pieces in the empennage kit (the floor wasn't working), so a fellow builder (Ken B.) recommended 2x4basics (Amazon) to create a 4'x8' bench/shelf. He uses this setup for the wings (large) in lieu of the EAA workbenches. I'm using it for storage, at least for now - thanks for the suggestion, Ken.
Notice that I did not add the middle shelf, since a lot of parts from Van's are tall/wide/fat:
I've been on hiatus for a few days, waiting for a few tools to complete the rudder. Now that's complete, I'm ready to prime the internal components ... just waiting for a day that is dry enough to spray outside. This time I did not scuff the alclad surface, since it seems counterintuitive to remove a protective coating just to put on another one. Since the primer is self-etching, if it sticks to the alclad, great. If not, the alclad is protective enough. From the VAF forums, a small group of people do NOT scuff prior to priming with SEM self-etching primer (or similar), so it should be just fine. So, first cleaning is with acetone, and second cleaning (also removes residue from acetone) with KleanStrip Prep-All, will be done just prior to priming.
Next day had a 3 hour dry window in the morning ... Prime-time:
Primer seems to have stuck well to the parts. Moving forward, anything that is Alclad (i.e., parts protected with blue vinyl) already has the protective alonized coating, and thus won't need to be primed ... unless I scuff the heck out of it by accident. I'll thank Ken for that suggestion as well ...
